Leaving Clara’s body behind, Rin returned to the Red Forest with Ezo—the place he once wished never to see again.
“Lead me to the Light Crack. I’ll cut the Moon’s heart tendon!” Rin declared.
“You’ll die, my friend, the moment you succeed,” Ezo replied softly.
“Don’t worry.”
They walked through an ancient forest. For the first time in his life, Rin truly thought about death. He wondered how it would feel? Hurt? Or faster than asleep

At last, they reached a vast lake. Ezo stepped forward, muttered an incantation, and to Rin’s amazement, the water drained away. Instead of a sandy lakebed, a massive copper structure rose up, shaped like an enormous trumpet.
“That is a Takeyo,” Ezo explained. “It will carry you to the Light Crack.”
“You won’t come with me?” Rin asked.
“No. I must return and restore the real Moon,” Ezo said with a faint smile. Rin wished, just once, that he could smile as calmly as Ezo did.
Rin stepped onto the Takeyo. A burst of blue light surged after Ezo’s spell, lifting him high into the mountains. When the ride ended, Rin found himself standing before a cave.
“The Blood Moon chose well to hide its heart here,” Rin thought.
Inside, a massive black heart pulsed in the center of the cavern. Rin approached it, drawing a deep breath.
“Humans need love to survive!” he shouted.
He pulled a knife from his pocket and slashed the heart in two.

The cave shook violently, splitting apart. Rin could hear the Blood Moon groan, rage, and crumble. Looking down, he saw his body unraveling into smoke.
And then—the Blood Moon vanished. In its place, the Sun rose. Laughter and tears filled the air of the world below. Rin wept as well, overjoyed that he had glimpsed the Sun—just before fading away.
