Rin returned to his village with Ezo. He expected the villagers to shoo him away and punish him for coming back. But no. Nobody seemed to remember him, as if he were a stranger. No one was even surprised to see Ezo.
“See what I mean?” Ezo whispered.

Rin said nothing.
“Excuse me, do you know where Rin’s family lives?” Rin asked an old woman. She pointed toward the tower.
“Thanks,” Rin said. The woman walked away.
Rin and Ezo went toward the tower, looking back and forth.
“Excuse me, do you know where Rin’s family lives?” Ezo asked an old man. The man pointed in a direction and walked away.
Finally, they were there. Rin and Ezo came to a familiar house with a garden. A woman was cooking inside.
“Who is that?” Ezo asked.
“That’s my sister’s daughter, Clara,” Rin remembered. “We lived together when I was 28, after my sister passed away.”
“Let’s go inside,” Ezo suggested.
“Clara,” Rin called. Clara looked up.
“Who are you?” Clara asked.
“It’s me, Rin.”
“I don’t know anyone named Rin.”
“But—” Before Rin could finish his words, Clara turned gray and collapsed. A thin stream of smoke rose from her body and flew toward the Blood Moon. Clara had reached her 30th year.
“Help! Someone help my Clara!” Rin cried. People walked past without even looking. Rin slowly stood and turned toward Ezo.
“I understand what you meant now. I accept your mission.” Rin’s voice broke, and his first tear fell beneath the Blood Moon.
- Clara’s death had changed Rin’s heart. What would happen to him in the mission? Would he die? Or escape this world in some other way we cannot yet imagine?
- Let’s read and find out in Chapter 4—coming soon.
