Luna Lane and the Whispering Mask – Chapter 1: An unusual child

This is not the start of the story, you may want to read at the beginning through these links:

Life in Babb Village, Montana, was quiet and pleasant. People lived their days between work, school, markets, and old local tales. They were ordinary people, and they were proud of it. In a house at the edge of the village, beside St. Mary Pond, the family living there was ordinary too—except for one member.

Luna Lane lived a normal life, just like other girls her age. She stayed with her Aunt Moore and her three cousins, Lily, Henry, and Joanne Moore. Every day, Luna did her chores: sweeping and mopping the floors, watering the plants, cooking meals, and more.

A blond girl moving through everyday household work. She swept the stone path outside a small cottage, with flowers, open doors, she cleaned the stone floor inside the kitchen, holding a broom beside a bucket, with shelves of pots, jars, and a lit hearth around and she cooked at a wooden table, stirring a pot on a small stove while a child prepared food nearby. Warm sunlight, wooden beams, and stone walls connected everything, emphasizing a quiet routine of domestic life.
Every day, Luna did her chores: sweeping and mopping the floors, watering the plants, cooking meals, and more.

Yet Luna was not truly ordinary. First, she hated summer more than any other season. Second, she loved doing homework but had to do it in secret. And finally, she was an Auditor.

Auditors were a group of people who could hear deep sounds that normal humans, called Intor, could not. They used sound to control and move objects, to defend themselves, and even to fight. To an Auditor, sound was everything—it was power, energy, motivation, and protection. All Auditors studied at a school called the Ancient Auditorium, also known as 2A. Luna had just finished her first year there the year before.

That morning, Luna was making pancakes for breakfast when a strange wind rushed through the house, carrying a letter with it. She picked it up with trembling hands and opened it. The letter read:

A blond young girl stood in a stone kitchen, holding a folded letter with both hands and looking down at it. She wore a brown dress with a blue apron tied at the waist and her eyes were wide as she read.
he picked it up with trembling hands and opened it.

“Dear Luna,

Hope you are doing well among the Intor. If you are free, please come to our house in Hawaii, on Whitningstress Street.

See you soon,

Iris Ministon & Malik White”

  • That was a soft and gentle beginning. I hope she will find many adventures in the future. Let’s guess! How about monsters? Or curses? Wizards?
  • Anyway, let’s find out more in Chapter 2 – coming soon!
