Luna, Iris, and Malik were studying in the common room. Iris was easily the smartest student in the school. She spent most of her time reading, studying, and digging through books in the library.
“You’re way too serious, Iris,” Malik said.
“You should study too, Luna. Malik,” Iris replied, pushing up her glasses
“Oh come on, the exam was still like a century away,” Luna said.
“Six months, not a century,” Iris corrected her.

“Same thing,” Malik shrugged. “What class do we have next?”
“History of Sound” Iris replied
History of Sound was the only class with no practice, and it was easily the most boring one. Mr. Bell, the teacher, just read straight from the book while everyone copied his words.
“Today, we were going to learn about the war of 1076,” Mr. Bell said.
A few students yawned. Malik rested his head on the desk and started snoring. Luna stared out the window. Iris, on the other hand, was listening closely, her eyes shining. Somehow, studying never bored her.
“I would never have chosen this class if I knew it’d make me this sleepy,” Malik complained afterward.

“Stop whining,” Iris said.
“What’s next?” Malik asked.
“You and Iris had Action class,” Luna said. “I didn’t have anything until after lunch.”
“Lucky for you,” Malik sighed.
Luna waved goodbye and headed back to the common room. A few students were already there.
“Hey, Luna,” a boy said.
“Come sit with us.”
“I’m Oliver Bellwood,” he said. He had short dark-brown hair and deep blue eyes. “This is my twin, James. That’s Cassandra Valemont, and Mark Livingstone.”
“Nice to meet you,” Luna said.

They sat together, chatting about school, family, hobbies, and random stuff. Then, all of a sudden, the sky outside turned dark.
“Whoa, it got dark really fast,” Cassandra said, standing up.
Through the window, they saw hundreds of people in black cloaks heading toward the castle. Behind them drifted giant, smoky creatures with glowing red eyes.
Luna and the others rushed to the Grand Lobby. The windows shattered, glass flying everywhere. Some students used sound magic to form shields. The black-cloaked figures walked in slowly. One man stepped forward. He clearly looked like the leader.
“I don’t feel like fighting,” he said. “It’s boring, and you’ll all lose anyway. Just give me Luna Lane, the Living Key.”
The students backed away, leaving Luna, Malik, and Iris in the center.
“I only want Luna Lane.”
Malik shaped sound into a sharp blade looked like a sword. Iris blasted a loud wave to try to stun them. It didn’t work and the began to invaders laughed.

Luna stepped forward and sang a high note. The whole lobby shook. This time, the dark figures staggered. One by one, they began to retreat.
After they were gone, the teachers arrived.
“Lane, Ministon, White. With me,” Principal Arkwell said.
She took them to the teachers’ room.
“Tell me what happened.”
Several teachers were there, including Sepharis the librarian. Luna told them everything. When she finished, the room went quiet.
Sepharis shifted slightly.
“Clirk.”
Only Luna seemed to notice the sound.
“Who was that guy?” Malik asked.
“Maelor,” Arkwell said. “He used to study here. He was expelled in his fifth year for using dangerous sound magic.”
“We thought he was dead,” she added. “We were wrong.”

That night, while the students slept, Maelor sat on his throne in his valley far away.
“The Living Key,” he said softly. “Her natural power is too strong.”
He smiled.
“But I won’t worry. Luna Lane, you’ll find me yourself, one day. I know it.”
- Oh! The teachers know about the traitors now. They understand the danger. What a relief! But what will happen next? Hopefully, they will find a way to protect the whole school.
- Let’s find out in Chapter 6!
