Alice Copperment, a scientist, explored a robot factory owned by manager James Diggory, and it changed her life. Robots in this factory get energy from salt made from the outer core.
She did some math and guessed that the outer core would run out in a few weeks. To prove her guess, there were changes in the magnetic field and climate of the Earth, which led to changes in animal migration habits because of the lack of the outer core, and a strange disease spread all over the city.
She showed James how to make salt without using the outer core. That way, she saved the world, as Diggory had said.
