The Center: Chapter 3 – What a strange phenomenon!

Two weeks have passed since Alice Copperment had a serious conversation with James Diggory. She is almost ready to give up. She knows that James Diggory is a very stubborn person.

That night, Alice goes to bed feeling exhausted. She bets she will fall asleep right away, but no matter what she tries, she can’t sleep. She feels cold.

“That’s strange. The weather has been hot for the past few days,” Alice murmurs. She changes into a warmer outfit, one she usually only wears in the winter. However, she still feels cold.

The next day, she wakes up tired. However, she must go to work. She gets in her car and turns on a map app.

“What? The map is wrong! I usually go west, but now it’s directing me north.” Alice tries to reload the app, but it seems unstable.

“What is happening with the GPS? Maybe it’s just malfunctioning today,” she thinks, trying to rationalize the strange phenomenon.

By the time she arrives at her laboratory, her colleague Emma runs toward her, holding a newspaper.

“What’s happening, Emma?” Alice asks.

“Look!” Emma points to the headline: “A Large Number of Turtles Travel to Antarctica Instead of Australia!”

“What?” Alice frowns.

“Keep reading!” Emma urges.

“Rescuers have saved thousands of freezing turtles and their eggs in Antarctica. This is a very strange phenomenon. Some pods of whales have run aground on Florida’s shores. A large number of migrating geese have lost their way at the North Pole and were rescued by teams of experts.”

“What a strange thing!” Alice says.

Ethan Moore, another colleague, approaches them.

“People are having trouble with their skin. Their skin turns red, peels, blisters, and develops many other issues. Hospitals are becoming overcrowded because people are rushing there for treatment,” Ethan says, panicked.

“What disease is that?” Emma asks.

“No one knows! Many scientists have tried to find a cure, but they have failed. They don’t even know the cause of the illness!” Ethan shrugs.

Alice goes home, confused, after a long day at the laboratory. She goes online and checks the news. Almost every media outlet is reporting on the mysterious disease. It seems to be spreading worldwide at the same time, making it difficult to determine its origin.

“The GPS issues, the animals, temperature and now this strange disease… Today is full of problems. I hate problems,” Alice sighs. “Maybe this is just a dream.”

She falls fast asleep, hoping to wake up from the nightmare.

  • What is happening? Alice seem to be really upset. Alot of problems has confused her. What will she do? Will she fly to another planet to escape from this terrible world? Or will she do nothing but watches? Read Chapter 4 to know more about this situation.
