The Center – Chapter 1: A visit

A female worker approaches her.

“Welcome, ma’am. How can I help you?”

“Oh, please, can I meet Mr. Diggory, the manager?”

“Sure, follow me!”

Alice follows the employee through different rooms, halls, and doors until they stop in front of a door labeled “James Diggory”.

“Thank you!” Alice says. She tries to open the door, but it won’t budge.

“You must have a membership card to go in,” a voice says. It’s Mr. Diggory. “You don’t need to go into that boring and messy room. I want to show you something.”

Alice follows the boss to the rear of the factory. As they approach an exit, the manager asks Alice to wear an insulated suit and a mask. Excitedly, they step outside.

Even though Alice is wearing protective gear, she still notices the hot, uncomfortable temperature and the terrible smell. Mr. Diggory leads her into a large room in the middle of a garden. Workers are handling some shiny, golden, hot, sticky liquid and some gray, shiny, sticky liquid. She notices a deep, enormous hole, seemingly thousands of kilometers deep, with pipes hanging down into it. Smoke rises from the hole, and she hears the sound of boiling water below.

“The core of the Earth is called the inner core or inner nucleus. The inner core is a spheroid, mainly made up of an iron-nickel alloy. These pipes extract a liquid called outer core, which I use to generate energy for my robots,” Mr. Diggory explains.

“But how is that possible?”

“Like I said before, the outer core is a spheroid, mainly made up of an iron-nickel alloy. Metals can react with nonmetals to form salts. I have created robots that run on salt.”

  • That’s a very good idea about the robots. But despite that, Alice seems to not agree on this invention. Why? Maybe she have the same idea with James and she thinks James has a time travel machine and steals her idea. Maybe she is getting jealous and wants to destroy James Diggory’s idea.
